Otter Art Project

The North Coast Otter Art Project merges science and art. This Public Arts Initiative benefiting Humboldt State University’s Wildlife Department projects and scholarships, will feature 100 painted otters. Local artists decorated their 3-foot tall otter sculptures in late-2019, with mediums ranging from oil and acrylic paint, clay and mosaic tile, wire, cloth, plastic trash, and paper. Each of these 100 unique Otter Art sculptures will be displayed locally in shops, businesses, community centers, galleries, schools, and other locations.

A trail of otters will be created for the Otter Art Treasure Hunt. The original date for the Hunt was to be June 1, 2020, but that date was pushed due to California’s Shelter in Place health order. A new date will be released on the North Coast Otter Art Project Website. You can also see a gallery of the painted otters.

Fortuna will soon be home to two painted otters. The Gene Lucas Community Center will feature an otter painted by Dakota Daetwiler and the River Lodge Conference Center will feature an otter (see below) painted by James Rose.
